PITTSFIELD — Dethroned.

After winning four straight Region 4 girls cross country titles, the Union City Lady Bears came up two points short on Saturday and lost their title to North East.

Corry was fourth in the eight-school field that not only determines the team champion but the all-region all-stars.

The top seven finishers make first team and the second seven the second team.

North East had 55 points to 57 for Union City.

In the boys race, North East also ran to first place but this time in one-sided fashion. The Grapepickers had four first teamers and 25 points to 80 for Youngsville and 106 for third-place Corry.

“This is a tune-up for districts for us,” said Beaver coach Mike Woods. “We had some individual performers run well and as a team, I think we did some good things.

But we also realize if we want to accomplish our goals at districts, we will have to run better,” he claimed. “However, overall I’m pleased with the kids’ performances.”

A year ago in North East, Union City won its fourth straight title with Vicki Bem fourth and Rebecca Reichbaum fifth.

Bem took first place in this year’s race with a time of 19:17.5. North East’s Katie Perkins was second again. UC’s Lori Beth Nunemaker placed third (19:54.6) and Montana Sparks seventh (20:28).

Corry junior Rachel Munsee, 12th in 2008, made the first team placing sixth (20:09.4). Samantha Owens, 13th last year, moved up to ninth and made second team all-star.

For the boys, NE’s Alex Beardsley and Ryan Smathers went 1-2, Beardsley a repeat winner.

Corry’s Jordan Wingard, 11th a year ago, ran well to place third in 16:51.5.

The Beavers’ next man was down to 17th for Jared Colvin, followed by Alan Royek in 22nd.

Union City, with two of its top runners from a year ago — Ryan Myers and Buddy Arnold — on the football team, placed fifth after being second in ‘08.

Steve Mangol was the first Bear boy in 24th, Kevin Klus in 25th.

Corry and Union City run at the District 10 Meet this Saturday at Buhl Park at Sharon.
