UNION CITY — The Lady Bears clawed their way out of first-half foul trouble en route to a 52-31 nonregion basketball victory over winless Iroquois on Friday night.

Union City (4-6) never trailed after acquiring a 16-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Iroquois, however, were sent to the line numerous times toward the end of the first half due to a high volume of Union City fouls. Two UC starters eventually fouled out while three more players finished the game with three fouls each, but the Braves struggled to capitalize on the line, converting only 5-of-16 free throws.

The Bears were ahead 23-17 at the half and 34-23 after three.

Carly Williams and Jolene Bacon led the UC offense with 18 and 16 points, respectively. Bacon also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds, earning a double-double.

Sarah Toy scored 12 points while Kourtney Thomas, Alyssa Waldmann and Hayley Patchen contributed two points apiece.

Thomas registered eight rebounds while Williams and Toy grabbed six boards each.

The Union City girls will host Franklin (1-10) for a Region 3 contest at the Bears’ Den tonight.
