Several wrestlers from northwestern Pennsylvania will compete for medals Friday and Saturday during the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State Championship Tournament at Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre. Erie hosted the tourney the past two years.

Wrestling started this morning with the 8-and-under pigtail round. There also are divisions for 9-10-year-olds, 11-12-year-olds and 13-14-year-olds.

Saturday's finals start with the parade of champions at 4:30 p.m., followed by age-group finals every hour starting at 5:30 p.m.

Wrestlers from Area VIII, which includes all of Erie, Warren and Forest counties and some of Crawford County, and from Area VI, which consists of Crawford, Venango, Mercer and Lawrence counties, qualified during their area tournaments last Saturday and Sunday. The top two placewinners advance to the state tournament.

Representing Corry are Ryan Morris, Shane Taubert and Jonathon Hammond. Union City is represented by Gabe Pieper, William Burgess, Braden Tomcho, Tim Vargo and Storm McDonald.

It is the first time the tournament will take place in northeastern Pennsylvania after stops in Erie, Johnstown, Altoona, State College and Hershey.

See Saturday’s edition for local results.
