UNION CITY — Both Union City and Youngsville were winless in Region 3 boys basketball prior to Tuesday’s region bout in the Bears’ Den.

UC jumped out to an early 10-4 by the end of the first quarter, but the Eagles (now 1-6, 4-8) soared past the Bears (0-7, 1-14) to a 37-26 region victory. Two three-point periods by Union City in the second and fourth quarters did in the hosts.

“We went cold on offense in the second and fourth quarters,” assistant coach Omar Chase said. “That was the difference in the game.”

The Bears and Eagles were even at 13 at halftime. However, Youngsville outscored UC 24-13 in the second half.

“The guys battled hard,” Chase said. “When you hold a team to 37 points you should come away with a win, but not when you can’t score.”

• Union City’s JVs improved to 5-9 with a 53-30 victory.

“It was a good team win at home,” said coach Chase. “Everyone played and had a ton of fun.

“Kevin Sorenson and Xander Shields had their best games of the season,” he noted. “Everyone contributed, that’s what a coach likes to see.”

Hoban led the scoring with a dozen points, Nate Baxter and James Ames with six each.
