The Moose got loose, and U.A.W. was nearly perfect.
That’s what happened in the first round of the best-of-three Major boys baseball semifinals.
Moose, the No. 3 seed, surprised second-seeded Beaver Club 9-7 in the second game at Bracken Field.
The Moose played superb defense, particularly in the outfield, Kyle Daniels with a big catch.
Brady Davis had three hits and two runs batted in, Matt Brundage with three hits.
Jonathan Keener and Bryton Lyon had two hits, Joey Perry a double.
For Beaver Club, Ethan Brown had three hits. Mark Brady had a great defensive play at first base to keep the game close.
Volk was the winning pitcher going 5 2/3 innings with six strikeouts and two walks. Brundage got the save with a last-out strikeout.
Brown started for BC with Kenny Nichols giving up four runs in two innings. Greg Conley and Nick Marrs went one inning apiece.
In the opener, Liam Cragg struck out the first three batters and retired 11 straight Elks batters in U.A.W’s 5-2 victory.
Cragg wound up going 3 2/3 innings, leaving after 49 pitches. He fanned seven, walked none and gave up only Jimmy Donaldson’s base hit.
Tagen Drayer, Tyler Burlew and Kameron Beeman finished up after the pesky Elkers rallied in the final frame.
Cragg and Drayer both had two hits, as did Donaldson.
Game 2’s are today. This time Moose and Beaver Club start at 5:30 p.m., followed by U.A.W. and the Elks. If a third game is needed, it would be Friday.
The best-of-three finals are scheduled to start on Monday.
