Corry’s girls basketball team showed it can play against tough competition, but in the end Strong Vincent had a little more in knocking off the Lady Beavers 33-30 in Monday’s defensive struggle.

“It went down to the wire,” reported coach Sarah Grab. “We executed our game plan to perfection. We stopped their inside game, we got them in foul trouble, and we pushed the ball.

“I was extremely pleased with our defense,” she claimed. “We held them to 33 points. If you would have told me in the beginning of the game that we would have held them to 33 points, I would have guaranteed a win.

“We just couldn't get anything going in the second half,” said Grab. “To their credit, they ran a very effective 2-3 zone and we really struggled against it.

“I certainly thought this was our best defensive performance, we held a very dominant team to 33 points and held their best player to only 10,” she noted. “What also hurt us was free throws, we missed eight (of 16 attempts). Shooting 50 percent won't win games.

“It came down to a last second shot,” said Grab. “For the fans and for the girls, I'm sure this was a fun game to watch. I saw a lot of improvements and the girls played hard and battled from start to finish.

“We definitely got better tonight,” she claimed. “This was a great learning experience for us. We all took something away from this game”

Emily Greer led the way with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Tabitha Jaggi had seven points and six rebounds.

Corry won the JV game, 20-12. Morgan Haibach had 10 points, Alisha Yoder and Darla Brown each with four.

The Lady Beavers host their holiday tourney that runs Saturday and Monday with varsity and junior varsity games.
