Corry girls post key win at Harbor Creek

Corry’s Mehan Carney (5) played well.

HARBOR CREEK — Corry’s girls avoided an upset and proved they could win a region game on the road last night.

Tied with host Harbor Creek after three quarters, the Lady Beavers outscored the Huskies by three in the final stanza to prevail, 42-39.

“We pulled off a close one after being down,” reported coach Sarah Grab. “It was a defensive battle the entire game

“I was so proud of my girls, they held their composure, played hard until the end, and pulled off the win,” she noted. “These are all character building games.

“We dug deep and challenged one another, ultimately pulling out the victory,” Grab said. “Every girl played a vital part in our victory. Meghan Carney (see photo) had another big night for us as well.”

Carney finished with 17 points, 13 in the second half.

Emily Greer also played a strong game leading the way with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

“I will give Harbor Creek a lot of credit, they played extremely hard and made us work for every point we scored,” Grab admitted. “It is always a battle when we enter Husky territory. Last year we won at the buzzer by one point.

“Tabitha (Jaggi), Miranda (Cummings), Kristen (Dennis) and Sarah (Zaczkiewicz) all played great defense for us,” she continued. “When we keep teams in the 30's we have done a great job on defense. Even though we had a great offensive production from Meghan and Emily, our defensive stops are even more important. It was a total team win.

“It was a great win, but we have an even bigger challenge ahead of us,” Grab stated.

Corry hosts Mercyhurst Prep on Thursday. The Lady Lakers took the lead in the league with an impressive 65-30 win over General McLane.

“If we play our game and defend like we are capable, I am confident that we can upset Mercyhurst,” Grab claimed,

The junior varsity team was again mismatched bowing, 33-10. Morgan Haibach and Hannah Kondrlik had four points apiece.
