In another early showdown at The Ballpark At Columbus, Corry saved its best for last.
The last swing of the game was a two-run homer off the bat of Justin Oesch propelling CAHS to a stunning 3-1 win over Harbor Creek and making the Beavers 2-0 in Region 6.
It was a pitcher’s duel between Corry’s Scottie Frisina and Huskie Tyler Chilcott with both teams finally scoring in the sixth inning.
“Chilcott pitched a great game, but Scottie and Aaron (Cressley) were better,” said Corry coach Mike Daniels. “I think it came down to our depth at the pitching position.
“We have two number ones and they didn't have that kind of quality pitching behind Chilcott,” he said. “Defensively we made some very heads up plays that got us out of some tight spots.
“Their defense is suspect and we didn't put the pressure on them like we should have,” said Daniels. “When Scottie put the pressure on them by stealing third in the sixth inning, they made the error we needed to stay in the game.”
Harbor Creek got on the scoreboard when Tim Schwenk doubled, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Jared Murosky’s sacrifice fly.
Frisina then took things into his own hands, or legs, in the case. The record-setting quarterback beat out an infield single and stole second. With two out, he took off for third. He was safe on the steal, and the ball got away from the third baseman allowing him to score the tying run.
Adam Zimmerman reached second but was stranded in the bottom of the seventh.
In the eighth, after a double play ended the Harbor Creek at bat, Frisina drew a lead-off walk off reliever Scott Stephenson.
Oesch, who was 0 for 3 with two strikeouts, then won the game with his dramatic homer.
“It is obvious that Justin's homer was a key to the win,” said Daniels, admitting he didn’t think the game would be this close. “I think we would have gotten to Stephenson eventually but it was nice to end it with a bang.”
Corry, now 5-0 overall, has another important home game tomorrow versus Meadville, 4-4 overall and 2-0 in Region 2.
Corry won the junior varsity game, 2-1. Tyler Engle pitched five innings for the win, allowing three hits and one walk, striking out three. Shawn Lutton got the save allowing one hit and no walks in two innings, fanning one.
Corry scored in the third with two outs. Matt Cragg singled, stole second and scored on Engle's double.
In the fifth ining. Lutton got aboard on an error, Engle singled, Levi Berkhous singled, and Mitch Burrows hit a sacrifice fly to score Lutton from third for the go-ahead run.
Engle had a single and double, Lutton and Curt Burkhart also with singles.
