EDINBORO — Try as they may, the Union City Bears couldn't stop the Linesville duo of Trevor Litwiler and Walt Litwin last night in the first round of District 10 Class A playoffs.

Union City scored its only touchdown of the night in the first quarter, and from there it was all Linesville, which ate up the Bears 48-7 at General McLane High School's Linden Field.

Union City finished its solid season at 7-4, while the Lions moved to 9-2 and the next round of playoffs.

Union City coach Brian Patten said making the playoffs was their goal all season.

"Next year, we have to set our sights higher, not only to get to the playofffs but to win a game," Patten said.

The Bears gave the fans hope when they lit up the scoreboard first when Shane Rankin capped a 74-yard, five-play drive by running the ball in 22 yards for a 6-0 lead. Tony Pelc's kick gave the Bears a 7-0 lead with 6:59 left in the quarter.

But that was it for the Bears, who had six costly turnovers — three fumbles and three interceptions. And it didn't help Union City that Greg Reinke, who was in as a receiver, was playing with a broken hand — an injury he incurred against Mercyhurst Prep in the regular-season finale Nov. 7.

The Linesville defense held Union City's Jared Burger, who entered the game as District 10's leading rusher, to 89 yards on 17 carries. Burger finishes the year with 1,512 yards rushing.

Linesville started its offensive attack minutes later and never looked back. Litwiler lit up the board twice before the second quarter, giving Linesville a 14-7 lead at the half.

The Lions continued their scoring barrage in the second quarter by adding 21 points and going into the locker room with a 35-7 lead.

The Lions added 13 more points in the final stanza to top off their scoring.

Litwiler, Litwin and Jimmy Kearns finished the night with two touchdowns each, whole A.J. thompson tacked on the final score.
