UNION CITY — Oh, what a trip to the pitcher’s circle can accomplish.

In a key Region 2 softball showdown Wednesday with Cochranton, Union City led 2-0 in the third inning but the visitors had the bases loaded with no outs.

Head coach Jerry VanZandt took time-out and visited the circle to talk to pitcher Megan Kimmy and the infielders. Whatever he said was magic.

The next Cardinal batter hit into a 1-2-3 double play followed by a strikeout — and end of the rally.

Union City’s bats then came alive scoring six runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to win by the 10-run mercy rule, 11-1.

Against the wind, Kimmy homered in the first inning and Lori Beth Nunemaker belted a three-run HR over the right field fence in the decisive fourth.

Jamie Gawlinski wound up with three hits and three RBI, Megan Brown and Summer Blakeslee both with two hits. Brooke Reynolds, Gawlinski and Blakeslee scored twice.

Union City avenged an earlier 3-2 loss to the Lady Cards.

With the victory, UC ties Cochranton for second place in the region with 6-2 records, now a game behind Conneaut Valley.

“This was a huge win, we really needed this one,” reported assistant coach Frank Snyder. “The girls were prepared for this and absolutely crushed the ball.

“We are tied for second and we host Conneaut Valley next Tuesday,” he noted. “Valley and Cochranton still have to play twice., so we control our own destiny.”

The Lady Bears play at Cambridge Springs on Friday.
