WATERFORD — Corry’s Minor girls all-stars had just enough to outlast Northwestern 11-8 in Monday’s opening action in District 3.
“It was everything I expected it to be,” reported coach Dan Gates. “Northwestern has a very good team, and so do we.”
Cassandra Lehner had three hits for the winners, Ryann Brundage two including a triple.
Lehner led off the game with a bunt single and scored on a wild pitch. Lizzy Weingard’;s double plated Brundage and Autumn Heasley for a 3-0 lead.
Northwestern scored twice in an error, Corry taking a 4-2 lead as Lehner had another bunt single and again scored on a wild pitch.
NW went ahead 6-4 on a three-run double and wild pitch.
In the third, Brundage walked and scored on Kaylee McCray’s base hit.
McCray, the starting pitcher, then retired the next six Northwestern batters.
In the fourth, with two away and no one on base, Lehner had her third bunt single. She scored on a wild pitch to tie it at 6. Megan Dennis walked and scored on Brundage’s three-base hit. Heasley followed with a triple and came home on another wild pitch for a 9-6 lead.
NW then scored twice to get within 9-8.
In the sixth, Kylie Tucci reached second on an error, Brundage singled and stole second. The runners scored on back-to-back ground outs for some insurance.
“Kaylee pitched a great game, Lehner and Brundage were lightning on the bases scoring seven of our runs,” Gates pointed out. Brundage crossed the plate four times, Lehner three.
McCray struck out eight and walked two.
