Corry soccer team's first win

Corry soccer players surround head coach Jordan Schrecengost after dumping a water cooler over his head to celebrate the first victory of his coaching career and the team's first win of the season.

CONNEAUT, OHIO — Corry's varsity boys soccer players flipped the script from their previous game and earned their first win of the year.

After falling 4-0 to Iroquois in the season opener, the Beavers bounced back with a 4-0 victory of their own, blanking Region 3 opponent Conneaut (Ohio) on Tuesday evening.

Corry had a 3-0 lead over the hosts at halftime led by senior striker Bryce Maleski.

The Beavers wasted little time as Maleski put one in the back of the Spartans' net less than five minutes into the first half.

Maleski then gave Corry a 2-0 advantage when he scored with 27:26 to go in the opening half.

Both of Maleski's goals were assisted by senior forward Jake Blake.

Chris Almeda, a senior midfielder, scored off a pass from Maleski with just under nine minutes left in the half to make it 3-0.

Blake netted the Beavers' fourth goal with 8:28 remaining in the region contest. Blake's goal was assisted by Maleski.

"Every goal we scored was assisted, which speaks volumes to the teamwork and selflessness exuded by this squad," head coach Jordan Schrecengost said. "Bryce had an amazing game with a pair of goals and assists. Jake also had a standout performance, finishing with one goal and two assists."

Senior goalkeeper Steel Fuller recorded 17 saves to earn a shutout in net.

"Steel kept everything out of the net, including some close calls, and Chris proved he can be a threat on offense as well as defense," Schrecengost said. "I couldn't be happier with the team's performance. The players showed they are capable of scoring goals and winning games."

After the match ended, the Corry players had an icy surprise for coach "Schreck" as they dumped their water cooler on him to celebrate his first-ever win as a varsity coach.

"It was a moment I'll never forget," Schrecengost said.

Corry is now 1-1-0 overall and in region play with the win against Conneaut (1-4-0, 0-2-0).

The Beavers will host the Lakers of Mercyhurst Prep on Thursday at Sheen Field. The Region 3 matchup will kick off at 4:30 p.m.

"Mercyhurst Prep will be a tough opponent, but we're hoping to take some of the momentum we built up on Tuesday into our next match," Schrecengost said.
