Corry had several new faces in its lineup yesterday due to illness, injuries and academics.
But it was having a nose for the ball that paid off in the end.
Sophomore Jamie McClelland, who was again wearing a face guard to cover his broken nose, banked home the game-winning goal off the far post in overtime giving the Beavers a 2-1 victory over lowly Franklin.
Corry improved to 5-6-1 in the region and 5-7-2 overall. Franklin is 1-11 in Region 2.
Corry was without Andy Hajec, Lu Guanyle and Todd Knapp.
So stepping in were Ryan Walsh, Tyler McClelland and Andy Czech, making their first varsity starts.
Things started poorly for the Beavers as Franklin scored 5 minutes into the match at Sheen Field, Nic Jones scoring on an assist from Elijah Cooke.
Dave Hajec, who had not scored in several games, tied things up as he dribbled though a couple of defenders and connected with 16:43 showing on the first-half scoreboard.
Hajec now has 65 career goals, 13 coming this season.
No one scored in the second half or into the overtime.
Then Jamie McClelland won it in the waning moments of OT.
Corry’s Tyler Rash played well in goal, while Dylan Burgert made 11 saves for Franklin.
Corry’s JVs played well but Franklin came away a 2-1 winner.
The Beavers have another home match tomorrow versus Erie East, kickoff at 11 a.m. Corry then hosts playoff-bound Eisenhower on Monday at 4 p.m.
