It was a long time coming for the Corry boys basketball team — and the first win for new head coach Chad Sutton.

The Beavers ended a 21-game losing slide besting Youngsville — the only team Corry defeated last year — last night, 54-28.

Things started slowly but Aaron Cressley came off the bench to provide a big spark. He netted two 3-pointers in the first quarter as Corry bolted ahead 15-2, despite missing the first four free throws.

“I don't think we played the best basketball, but I was happy with our defensive intensity and effort,” said Sutton, who had coached on the junior high level in Meadville the past few seasons.

“Understanding that it's the first game of the year, I expected some early nerves,” he noted. “Offensively, we were getting good looks, but we had a difficult night shooting.

“I'm confident that our team shooting will improve as the season progresses,” Sutton reported. “We also had a tough night from the foul line.”

Corry converted just 7 of 19 free throws. That included a 4 for 4 night from Scottie Frisina who had 14 points.

Cressley finished with 12, including three 3-pointers. His ‘3’ gave Corry its 23-10 lead at the half.

Frisina’s second 3-pointer put Corry up 30-10 and it was all over.

Matt Kellogg’s first varsity basket put the Beavers up, 46-23, with just over 4 minutes to play. Colin Barbish’s hoop made it 46-23, then Kellogg scored again (see photo) with 3:17 left.

“Defensively, we need to improve our transition defense and get better at ‘help side’ defense,” Sutton stated. “Our defensive effort was a positive.”

Dane Freebough led 0-3 Youngsville with 10 points. The Eagles also went 1-21 last season.

Corry won the JV game 62-14, ahead 18-2 after one quarter. Mitchell Burrows and Jacques Rougeau combined for 23 points.

No information was reported.

Corry now makes the long haul to Bradford tomorrow night. The Owls fell 71-49 Tuesday at Warren.
