UNION CITY — In the opening swim meet of the season last night, Corry’s boys were winners as were the Union City girls.

“We have a young team this year with 30 members, but only seven that are juniors or seniors,” reported coach Ryan Lawrence. “We are excited about the season.

“For many, this was their first meet ever,” he pointed out. “I’m looking to see huge improvements from everyone, we just need to keep working hard and having fun.”

The Beaver boys won 86-78 winning all three relays. Jake Stockton was first in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, plus being on two winning relays. Josh Durmis was aboard all three relays. Freshman Eric Matteson won the 100 breaststroke. Kyle Labowski had two seconds.

For Union City, Scott Glenn (200 IM and 100 back) and Elias Tillotson (diving and 50 free) won twice. Taking firsts were Fabian Polo and Zane Taylor.

The meet went down to the final 400 relay with Durmis, Labowski, Matteson and Stockton winning in 4:02.40.

“Our girls swam a tough meet, just 21 points behind the Bears,” said Lawrence.

Tori Niggel’s 152.15 points in diving was a district-qualifying score.

Cheyenne McGurk won the 500 free while newcomer Allysa Johnson improved her 500 time. Vicky Matteson had a pair of seconds.

For Union City, three girls won two events: Laneya Mosher, Chelsey Mosher and Mackenzie Gilson. The Moshers were both on the winning 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay.

Gilson’s winning time in the 50 free was 30.13.

Taryn Pieper took first in the 100 free, Savannah Dawson second in the 200 IM and 500 free.

On Monday, Corry hosts Iroquois while Union City entertains North East.
