The Corry junior varsity football team opened its season Monday night hosting the Harbor Creek Huskies at Sheen Field. The Huskies downed the Beavers 22-6, in a game that was much closer than the score indicates.
After offensive drives by both Harbor Creek and Corry that came away with no points, Corry was able to open the scoring in the first quarter. Corry's offensive line, consisting of Nathan Shirey, Nick Ingerson, Cole Nickerson, Wyatt Eshelman and Drew Kuzma, paved the way for a 74-yard touchdown drive. Aiden Knapp took the pitch from quarterback Waylon Jackson and punched in a 6-yard touchdown and Corry was up 6-0.
The score remained 6-0 for the remainder of the entire first half. Corry's offense threatened to score on several occasions, while Huskies offense couldn't get anywhere against the Beaver's stout defense. Corry's defensive line, led by John Styborski, Cole Nickerson and Nick Ingerson shut down Harbor Creek's running game. Linebackers Marley Gehl, Kyron Helmer, Geoffrey Petty and James Carpenter were instrumental in shutting down Harbor Creek as well.
Harbor Creek's offense was able to dent the scoreboard early in the third quarter, with the Huskies scoring on a 65-yard touchdown run. They tacked on a 2-point conversion pass to go up 8-6 and the score stayed there throughout the rest of the third quarter.
Corry had several promising offensive drives thwarted by the Harbor Creek defense. One drive ended with a fumble and another with Corry going for it on fourth down and coming up six inches short of the first down.
Early in the fourth quarter, Harbor Creek was able to strike again for a TD, but they missed the 2-point conversion and were up 14-6. Corry's offense continued to move the ball, but was not able to finish drives. A late pick six interception rounded out the scoring for the game, with Harbor Creek getting the 2-pointer going up 22-6.
Knapp finished the game with 120 yards rushing and a TD, with Petty and Cooper Yatsko making strong contributions to the Corry rushing totals. Defensively, Nickerson, Petty, Styborski, and Eshelman contributed to five sacks of the Harbor Creek quarterback. Marley Gehl added 10 tackles from his linebacker position.
The Corry JVs play again this coming Saturday at General McLane.
