Melvin M. Vanderhoof

Melvin M. Vanderhoof, 89, of Corry, Pa., passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2022, surrounded by his family at the home of his son in Purcellville, Va., after a short battle with lung cancer. 

He was born Jan. 7, 1933, in Corry, Pa., the son of the late Melvin Merlin Vanderhoof and Gertrude Higby. 

Melvin was raised by his grandmother, Jennifer Rose Willis, of whom he spoke very fondly.

Melvin was raised and educated in Corry. In 1951, he married Roberta (Bobbi) Henderson, who preceded him in death, after 66 years of marriage in 2017. At the age of 17, Melvin joined the U.S. Army and was a Korean War veteran. Upon his honorable discharge from service, Melvin became a long-haul truck driver and worked for various employers for 37 years until his retirement. 

Post retirement, Melvin and Bobbi traveled the United States in their 5th wheel trailer for multiple years along with their dog, Dusty. Melvin was an avid wood worker and enjoyed creating seasonal décor for his family. When Melvin and Bobbi were not on the road, they enjoyed their home at Hare Creek Campground for several years, where you could often find Melvin enjoying a cup of coffee and visiting with fellow campers on his porch.

In addition to his parents and wife, Melvin was preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Lutton; and brothers, Dennis, William and Larry Higby.

Melvin is survived by four daughters, a son, and a son-in-law: Linda Starr and her husband, Al, of Clearfield, Pa.; Sharon McCracken and her husband, Randy, of Erie, Pa.; Shelly Zoka and her husband, Joe, of Bethel Park, Pa., and Lori Miller and her husband, Tom, of Canadohta Lake, Pa.; Brian Vanderhoof and his wife, Deb, of Purcellville Va., and Tom Lutton of Corry, Pa.

Melvin is also survived by three brothers: Merlin Vanderhoof and his wife, Rose, of Wakeman, Ohio; Ron Higby and his wife, Rula, of Corry, Pa., and Ricky Higby and his wife, Alyce, of Erie, Pa. He also had two sisters, Barbara Jewell of Ft. Mitchell, Ala., and Darlene Stephens of Conowingo, Md.; as well as a sister-in-law, Jan Higby, of Lowell, N.C.

Melvin was blessed with 25 grandchildren and spouses, 23 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may call Bracken Funeral Home Inc., 315 N. Center St., Corry, PA 16407, on Friday, June 24, from noon until time of funeral service at 2 p.m. with Deacon Bill Saborsky officiating.

Next to his wife, Melvin will be interred at St. Elizabeth’s Cemetery in Corry, Pa.
