Gordon W. Smith
Gordon W. Smith, age 85, of Erie, passed away Tuesday, January 19, 2010, at Ball Pavilion. He was born in Erie on October 4, 1924, son of the late Kenneth and Caddie Smith.
Gordon was a member of the U.S. Pharmacopeia Task Force on Biological Indicators, Health Industries Association Sterile Disposable Device Committee, Task Force on Sterility Test Procedures, Task Force for Standardization of Biological Indicators, American Society for Microbiology and the Society for Industrial Microbiology. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church serving as chairman of Trustees, member of Administrative Board, Committee on Nominations and Personnel, Pastor-Parish Relation Committee, Vice President of United Methodist Men, Usher and several other committees.
He attended Slippery Rock College, Edinboro College and received a B.S. degree at Syracuse University. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army in WWII and was assigned duty with the ambulance corps in the European Theater.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene K. Smith, and a sister, Janet Schall.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Carol I. Smith; three daughters, Joyce Tofel (Don), of Allen, Texas, Karen Triana (Steve), of North East, and Sandra Williams (Russ), of Chicago, Ill.; one son, Douglas Smith (Shelly), of Erie; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
