Gilbert E. ‘Gib’ Putman

Gilbert E. “Gib” Putman, 88, of Picidilli Hill Road, Corry, Pa., died Wednesday, May 13, 2020, at Corry Memorial Hospital.

He was born Feb. 17, 1932, in Erie, Pa., a son of the late Philip O. Putman and Adele Mudge Putman Andrews.

He was raised and educated in Erie, and graduated from Erie Technical High School in 1950. Gib entered the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Erie and worked at the Erie Canteen Corporation in the service and repair department for 22 years. He then worked various jobs before beginning employment at McInnes Steel in Corry as a millwright/mechanic. He retired in 1997 after 19 years of service with the company.

Gib was a member of the Spring Creek Community Church and also attended the West Spring Creek Congregational Church. He served as a church deacon and Sunday school teacher. Gib was a former Cub Scout leader in Erie for five years, also a 4-H leader five years and was a member of the Old Times Rodeo and Wild West. He enjoyed riding horses and had ridden in rodeos, working on cars and tractors. To Gib, strangers were just friends he hadn’t met yet. He was always willing to drop anything to do anything to help anyone.

In addition to his parents, Gib was preceded in death by his stepfather, Clifford Andrews; a son-in-law, Dan Vance; a sister, Myrna Mangini; and two brothers, Philip and David Putman.

Gib is survived by his wife, Jacqueline E. “Jackie” Bauder Putman, whom he married June 13, 1953, in Erie, Pa.; two daughters, Diane “Penny” Vance of Corry, Pa., and Renee G. Schibner and her husband Matthew of Glenn Allen, Va.; a son, Matt Putman and his wife Carol of North East, Pa.; and two sisters-in-law, Mimi and Maris Putman of California.

He his also survived by seven grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service will by held by his family with a public memorial service to by announced at a later date.

Burial will be in Spring Creek Cemetery, Spring Creek, Pa.
