Thaddeus "Ted" Joseph Pondel, 80, of Route 6, Columbus, Pa., died Tuesday, January 31, 2012, at the Rouse Home in Youngsville, Pa.
He was born on August 12, 1931, on the family farm in Columbus, Pa., a son of the late John Paul and Sophia Volen Pondel.
He went to school until the third grade in the one-room Webber School house, then attended Columbus Elementary School and graduated in 1949 from Corry High School.
Ted was a dairy farmer, a mink rancher and a cattle hauler, and he also made maple syrup. He did custom farming, baling hay and driving a combine to cut oats and wheat. For the past 20 years, he cut and sold firewood and found great joy in visiting with his customers. Ted enjoyed polka dances, deer hunting, going to auctions and taking care of his cats and puppy dog.
He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Corry. He was also a social member of the VFW and Moose Lodge in Corry.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Bruce Pierce; and his nephews, Mark and David Pondel.
He is survived by his longtime friend and companion, Marian Barton, of Corry, Pa.
He was the youngest of six children and is also survived by his brothers, Joe Pondel of Columbus, Pa., and Hank Pondel of Spring Creek, Pa.; his sisters, Helen Ficcardi of Corry, Pa., Jenny Messenger of Bear Lake, Pa., and Laura Szewczuk of Orange Park, Fla.
Ted is also survived by his children, Vickie Pierce Schultze and her husband, Jeff, of Crossville, Tenn., Jackie Reynolds and her husband, Chuck, of Red Hook, N.Y., Ed Pondel and his wife, Sally, of Bear Lake, Pa., Steve Pondel and his wife, Diane, of Columbus, Pa., and Tim Pondel and his wife, Stephanie, of Corry, Pa.; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bracken Funeral Home, 315 N. Center St., Corry, Pa.
A funeral service will be held there Saturday at 11 am. Deacon William Saborsky will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Corry, Pa.
