Philip J. Northrop, 85, of Sundback Road, Spartansburg, Pa., went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 6, 2011, at his residence.
Mr. Northrop was born June 22, 1926, in Spartansburg, son of the late Philip and Mildred Goodwill Northrop.
He was raised and educated in Sparta Township, where he attended Sparta School and graduated from there in 1944.
Philip was employed as a postal carrier for the Spartansburg and Spring Creek areas. He retired after 38 years with the postal service. In addition, he owned and operated a dairy farm in Spartansburg.
Since his retirement, Philip and his wife had spent their winters in St. Cloud, Fla.
Mr. Northrop was a member of the First Baptist Church in Spartansburg and also belonged to the Senior Citizens Group, also in Spartansburg.
He enjoyed hunting and syrup making and later riding his bicycle in Florida.
Philip is survived by his wife, Kathryn Maker Northrop, whom he married June 13, 1944, in Townville, Pa.
He is also survived by a son, Randy Northrop and his wife, Angie, of Spartansburg; a daughter, Candace Walters and her husband, Joe, of Spartansburg; three brothers, Willis Northrop and his wife, Joyce, of Titusville, Pa., Gaylord Northrop and his wife, Doris, of Union City, Pa., and Dennis Northrop and his wife, Lori, of Corry.
Four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Friends may call Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Spartansburg and may attend a funeral service there on Monday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Earl Gutberlet and the Rev. Marvin Hutchison will officiate.
Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Spartansburg.
