Lyle C. Smith Sr.

 

Lyle C. Smith Sr., 88, of Sciota Street, Corry, Pa., died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2019, at Corry Manor.

He was born April 10, 1931, in Marcellus, N.Y., a son of the late Ivan and Marie Scharm Smith.

Lyle was raised and educated in Corry, Pa., and attended local schools. Following school, he worked on various farms in the area for many years and then was employed at General Electric in Erie until going to work for McInnes Steel in Corry. Lyle worked as a hammersmith there for 40 years until his retirement.

He was a fireman for 40 years with the Columbus Volunteer Fire Department where he was chief for two years and is an honorary lifetime member. Lyle was a member of Columbus Community Church. He was a great musician and singer and he especially loved his guitar and played in various bands. Lyle held an open mike night for 16 years where everyone would come to play music and sing together. His favorite song to sing to Evelyn was “Afraid of Losing You Again” by Charley Pride. Lyle and Evelyn lived in Leesburg, Florida, in the winter and spent the summers at Harecreek Campground in Corry.While they were in Florida, Lyle got ill and his grandson, Travis, took their motor home to Florida and moved them back to Harecreek Campground in Corry.         

In addition to his parents, Lyle was preceded in death in 2011 by his first wife of 63 years, Helen Hall Smith; his stepmom, Sylvia Ross Smith; stepson, James Adams, Jr.; a sister, Evelyn Smith; two brothers, Merl and Sydney Smith; and a stepgrandson, Jesse Martin.

Lyle is survived by his wife, Evelyn J. Burkett Adams Smith, whom he married Sept. 6, 2014, at the Columbus Community Church; two sons, Lyle Smith Jr. and his wife, Kathy of Troutville, Va., and Glenn Smith and his wife, Malissa of Columbus, Pa.; two stepdaughters, Peggy Hoogstad and her husband, David of Linesville, Pa., and Julie Hittie and her husband, Ben of Williamsport, Pa.; a sister, Sandy Smith of Corry, Pa.; a half-sister, June Ann Crosby and her husband, the Rev. Terry Crosby of Union City, Pa.; two sisters-in-law, Helen Smith of Corry, Pa., and Martha “Sis” Whiteley and her husband, Bert of Wrightsville, Pa.; a half-brother, Richard Smith of Corry, Pa.; and a brother-in-law, Blaine Burkett Jr. and his wife, MaryLou of Corry, Pa.

He is also survived by five grandchildren, Lyle Smith III, Lorraine, Rene, Travis and Stephanie; six step-grandchildren, Shane, Jamie, Sadie, Jordyn, Grace and Aaron; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson, Vincent Puntel; many nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Andy Whiteley.

Family and friends are invited to call at Bracken Funeral Home, 315 N. Center St., Corry, Pa., on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held at a later date.

Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery, Columbus, Pa.
