Joseph “Joe” Martin Malek Jr., 70, of Ridge Road, Columbus, Pa., died Wednesday, August 31, 2011, at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.
He was born in Corry, Pa., on October 19, 1940, a son of the late Joseph M. and Ethel Sterns Malek Sr.
Joe was raised and educated in Corry and attended Corry area schools. He entered the U.S. Army and served from 1959 to 1962. He served in Korea, where he was a Field Communications Specialist. After serving his country, he returned to Corry and worked for Foamex before moving to Virginia. While in Virginia, he worked for C & O Railroad for three years before returning to Corry. He then worked for Ajax Iron Works for 25 years in the foundry. In the early 1990s, he worked for the Corry Area School District in custodial maintenance. He retired January 3, 2003.
Joe was a member of the W.I.T. Camping Club. He enjoyed woodworking and traveling in his motor home, but mostly enjoyed being with his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joan Smith; and three brothers, Carl, Robert and Richard Malek.
He is survived by his wife, Shelva Waddell Malek, whom he married on October 19, 1962, in Virginia. Joe is also survived by two daughters, Beth Taydus and her husband, Jim, of Columbus, Pa., and Rhonda Glover and her husband, Chris, of Waterford, Pa.; two sons, Joe M. Malek III and his wife, Lisa, of Lexington, N.C., and Jeff Malek and his wife, Becky, of Cleveland, Ohio; three sisters, Margaret Shillinglaw of Arcadia, Fla., Lucille Whiteley and her husband, Jack, of Corry, Pa., and Barbara Gerhardt and her husband, Tom, of Tulsa, Okla.; and four brothers, Frank Malek and his wife, Linda, of Spring Creek, Pa., Merle Malek and his wife, Cheryl, of Okla., Edward Malek and his wife, Donna, of Pittsfield, Pa., and Edmund Malek and his wife, Carla, of Powell, Ohio.
Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Nicole and Devin Taydus, Kody, Jonathan and Bryon Braswell, Andrew Glover, Joseph Tyler “JT” Malek, and Erich, Abby and Trevor Malek; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Bracken Funeral Home, 315 N. Center St., Corry, Pa., on Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service there at 2 p.m. The Rev. Brian Eiss will officiate.
Burial will be in Spring Creek Cemetery, Spring Creek, Pa.
