Seven seniors return this season to lead the Lady Pickers varsity basketball team, as the squad makes the transition from Class AAA to AA and from Region 6 to Region 5.

The new schedule includes opponents similar to those the Pickers faced in the old Erie County League, such as Iroquois, Northwestern, Girard, and Fairview.

North East finished at 15-8 last year, and fell in the playoffs to the eventual District 10 champs. A challenging tournament lineup in the preseason will prepare the Lady Pickers for tough contests to come later, including Girard and General McLane.

Head Coach Terry Frontino said the seniors have a great chemistry and are very comfortable on the court with one another because they’ve played together since fourth grade.

“It’s a well-rounded team,” Frontino said, “with good scorers and quick rebounders. They’re a really fun group and are very coachable.

The senior leaders include: Anné Lewis, Leah Kowalewski, Alex Artise and Madi Turiczek, Alexis Bowen, Tori Prather and Ashley Bogart.

Frontino begins his fourth season this winter as head coach, having served two years as assistant coach at NEHS and 16 years at St. Gregory School. He is assisted by Dawn Turiczek, Abby Stadler and Dave Zamperini.
