North East Borough Council met for its second monthly meeting on Nov. 20 at the Borough office to wrap up business for the month.
Ordinance no. 897, Act 172, Firefighters Tax Relief, was approved to be advertised. The Firefighters Tax Relief was approved in November 2016 by the state of Pennsylvania to give property and earned income tax relief to firefighters. This relief is given to active volunteers who meet eligibility requirements based on training and attendance; all eligibility is handled by the chief of the fire department.
The Borough voted to advertise a 20 percent municipal property tax relief and up to a $250 earned income tax credit for the calendar year for volunteer firefighters.
The township approved to advertise the same tax relief for firefighters on Nov. 20.
The state’s goal on proposing this tax relief for firefighters is to help improve recruitment and retention in volunteer fire departments.
Ordinance no. 898, Wellington Street Bridge PennDOT agreement was approved to be advertised. The ordinance allows PennDOT to take care of the design work of the Wellington Street bridge, which was deemed deficient after a PennDOT study earlier this year. The design work will be federally funded by PennDOT and will not affect the borough’s 2018 budget or the streets department.
The annual Miller Mistletoe Mile’s request to use Gibson Park and borough streets on Dec. 17, from 5 to 9 p.m. was approved.
The next Borough council meeting will be held on Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. at the Borough Hall, 31 W. Main St.
