North East School District Superintendent Jim Brotz told the Board of School Directors at their regular meeting September 1 the new school year started smoothly throughout the district last week.

Also at the start of the meeting, Business Manager Brian Polito announced a list to be presented at the September 15 meeting for an auction of items no longer needed in the district.

In other business before the board, several personnel items were approved. Colleen Bahm was hired as an instructional aide for four hours per day at Earle C. Davis Primary at a salary of $10.96 per hour for a 60-working day probationary period as per contract effective September 2, 2011. Following the probationary period the rate will be $12.18 per hour.

Donna Young was hired as a cook’s helper at North East Middle School at a salary of $10.66 per hour for a 60-working day probationary period as per contract effective September 2, 2011. Following the probationary period, the rate will be $11.84 per hour.

Karen Croscut-Miller will transfer from long-term day-to-day substitute grade one teacher through January 27, 2012 to long-term day-to-day substitute kindergarten teacher at a salary of $230.02 per day effective August 25, 2011 through June 7, 2012 with respective benefits and excluding tuition reimbursement.

Kathleen Maloney was hired as a long-term day-to-day substitute grade one teacher at a salary of $230.02 per day effective August 25, 2011 through January 27, 2012 with respective benefits and excluding tuition reimbursement.

Abby Cermak was hired as a long-term day-to-day substitute half-day guidance counselor at North East High School at a salary of $115.01 per day effective August 22, 2011 through June 14, 2012 without respective benefits and excluding tuition reimbursement.

The Board accepted the resignation of Lois Wilkinson as a custodian at North East Elementary Center effective August 30, 2011.

The following individuals were approved for the 2011-12 NESD substitute list: Chad Ewings and Lynelle Kress, elementary K-6; Carolyn Szklenski, elementary K-6 and special education; Pamela Farrell and Emily Irwin, cafeteria and Renee Triana, aide.

The following individuals were approved for the position of coach/adviser/intramurals for the 2011-2012 school year: Paul Becker, high school Science Olympics with a stipend of $621.40; Eric Campbell, Ecology Club with a stipend of $528.19; Cindy Carlson, sound and lighting manager with a stipend of $1,864.20; Charles Cross, Technology Student Association with a stipend of $497.12; Kathleen Gallagher, junior class adviser with a stipend of $2,361.32; Mercedes Henning, sophomore class adviser with a stipend of $932.10; Beth Poor, NEMS PJAS with a stipend of $310.70 and NEMS Science Olympics with a stipend of $621.40; and Denise Pyle, intramurals grade six cross country with a stipend of $16.28 per hour.

The board approved one student group field trip request submitted. Stephan DeGrosky, band staff and several parent chaperones will accompany 72 band students to band competitions. The group will travel to General McLane High School on September 10, McDowell High School on September 17, Harbor Creek High School on October 15, Corry High School on October 22 and Veterans Stadium on October 29. NESD will pay $1,737.13 and the Music Boosters will pay $514.45 for bus transportation.
