Betty D. Franz

Betty D. Franz, a longtime resident of Wesleyville and Findley Lake, N.Y., passed away peacefully at home on Friday, August 24, 2012.  She was 93.  Betty was born on January 4, 1919 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, daughter of the late Ben F. and Ruth Ennes Daniels. 

Betty was a 1936 graduate of Strong Vincent High School.  In the early 1950’s she was active as a Cub Scout den mother and then a Girl Scout leader.  She enjoyed organic gardening, home canning of fruits and vegetables, and bird watching later in life.  She was a proponent of nature and wildlife conservation and avidly enjoyed crossword puzzles, including those found in the New York Times and Washington Post

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth H. Franz, on June 24, 1993, and her brother, William A. Daniels, Sr. who passed away on May 30, 2012 at the age of 94.  Survivors include her sons, Kent Franz of Silver Spring, Md. and Kirk Franz of Erie; daughters, Joy Franz and Melody Hewitt both of Erie; grandchildren, Kendie Reich (Kevin) of Laurel, Md., Shara Hewitt of Erie, Jason Hewitt (Allison) of Gastonia, N.C. and Kira Brooks of Dublin, Ireland; eight great-grandchildren; one niece and four nephews.

Concetta “Jessie” Martina Scotch, age 95, of North East, recently residing at Heritage House, died on Monday August 20, 2012 at UPMC Hamot.

She was born on September 21, 1916 in North East to the late Charles and Mary Barone Martina.

Jessie was a graduate of North East High School.

She was formerly employed at Welch Foods in North East for 35 years and was a member of St. Gregory Catholic Church.

Jessie enjoyed crocheting and following politics.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jacob C. Scotch, Sr. (September 26, 1991); infant son, David Scotch; sisters, Caroline Bush, Nellie Righi, Celia Amann, Mary Taccone, Josephine Maniscalco, and Nancy Griffith; brothers, Russell Martina and Samuel Martina.

Jessie is survived by her son, Jacob C. Scotch, Jr. (Shirley) of North East; grandchildren, David Scotch (Tracy) of North East, Steven Scotch of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Karen Forcht (Brian) of Harborcreek; great-grandchildren, Dawson, Jarett, Brady, Kalle, Cameron, and Austin; sisters, Ann Jardine (Donald) of Massillon, Ohio, Phyllis Dalrymple (George) of Canton, Ohio, and Joan Mulson (Donald) of North East; a brother, Louis Martina (Judy) of North East; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Martha A. Nemeth Ahlgren

Martha A. Nemeth Ahlgren, age 81, of Harborcreek Twp., passed away Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at Ball Pavilion following an extended illness. She was born in Erie on August 19, 1931, daughter of the late Jim and Ann Baginski.

Martha had worked for K-Mart for several years. She was a member of the Sweet Adelines, enjoyed cooking and baking, and listening to Tom Jones. She was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband, well known artist and teacher, Roy B. Ahlgren on February 4, 2011.

Survivors include four children, Deborah Gorny, Alan Ahlgren and Brian Ahlgren all of Erie, and David Ahlgren (Julia) of Sumter, S.C.; one half-brother, Gary Baginski (Linda) of Kernersville, N.C.; four grandchildren, Roger Gorny, Tim Ahlgren, Noelle Berkhof and Sandy Spangler (Michael); four great-grandchildren; a niece and nephew.

Nancy Louise Newman Gonzalez

Nancy Louise Newman Gonzalez, age 71, of North East, died on Monday August 27, 2012 at home.

She was born on June 20, 1941 in Sherman, N.Y. to the late William and Eunice Bissell Newman.

Nancy was formerly employed at Welch Foods in North East for 28 years.

She enjoyed gardening, playing cards, and spending time with family, friends, and her dog.

Preceded in death is her husband, Samuel Gonzalez; brothers, William, Everett, Ray, Morris, Richard, Harold, and James Newman, also an infant brother; sisters, Betty Newman, Vera Gilger, Viola Brumbaugh, and Opal Davis.

She is survived by her sons, Victor Gonzalez (Toni) of North East and Roberto Gonzalez (Stacy) of Erie; sisters, Nancy Luke of North East, Edith Rogers of North East, and Sally Stafford of Clymer; grandchildren, Samuel, Simon, Alena, and Abram.

Joseph P. Bross II -flag

Joseph P. Bross II age 86 of Harborcreek died on Saturday August 18, 2012 at TwinBrook Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born in Sheffield, Pa. on March 29, 1926 a son of the late Joseph P. and Veronica Andrews Bross.

Joseph proudly served his country in the United States Army during WW II serving in Japan.

He retired from Zurn Industries in 1987 after 37 years of service. Joe loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and gardening.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Michael Bross and one sister Elizabeth Ksiaszczak.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Pauline A. Straneva Bross, two sons; Joseph P. (Amy) Bross III and Robert (Kathleen) Bross all of Erie, one daughter Kathleen Hicks (David Steinhauer) of Sheffield, Pa., three grandchildren; Matthew Hicks, Elizabeth Bross and Neil Bross, one brother; John “Jack” (Marilyn) Bross of Erie, and three sisters; Helen Pearce of Erie, Veronica (Edward) Grucza of Florida and Josephine (Wesley) Housler of Almagorto, N.M.

Grant E. Bussard

Grant E. Bussard, infant son of Jason Bussard and Laura Sceiford of North East, passed away Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He was born on May 17, 2012 in Pittsburgh. Grant was sweet, he was strong, he was beautiful and he was deeply loved.

In addition to his parents, Grant is survived by his sister, Leah Bussard at home, his paternal grandparents, Ronald and Kimberly Bussard of AZ.  Maternal Grandparents, Chester Sceiford of North East,  Betsy Sceiford and George Teribery of North East and Steven and Anne Hipwell of McKean. Grant was preceded in death by many and loved by many including his aunts, uncles and cousins.

“The Glory of Life is not that it endures forever, but that, for a time, it includes so much that is beautiful.” Family and friends were received at the W. Florence Brooks Rihel

Florence Brooks Rihel, age 88, of Wesleyville, passed away Sunday, August 26, 2012 at her son Ron’s, residence. She was born in North East, Pa. on October 11, 1923, daughter of the late Hervie and Anna Walters Brooks.

She was a lifelong Erie resident. Florence had previously worked with Bliley Electric, Lord Mfg., Boston Store, tied grapes for the Moorhead family in North East, and also worked at Stop & Save.

Preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Rihel; and four brothers and four sisters.

Florence is survived by two sons, Robert J. Rihel (Patricia) of Harborcreek and Ronald P. Rihel (Darlene) of Wesleyville; two brothers, Hervie “Junior” Brooks of Hollyhill, Fla. and Frank Brooks of Waterford; one sister, Merle Campbell of Erie; six grandchildren, Lisa Vickey, Laura Rihel, Tricia Thompson, Robert Rihel, Jr., and Wendy and Rhonda Rihel; eight great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Raymond S. Pastewka

Raymond S. Pastewka, age 88, of Erie, passed away Sunday, August 26, 2012, at St. Mary’s Home East. He was born May 30, 1924, son of the late Joseph and Evelyn Tomczak Pastewka.

Ray was a founding member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church and a former Eucharist Minister and member of the Men’s Counsel. He was a graduate of Erie Technical School. Ray served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1943 to 1946, in the 8th Armored Division and drove a half track in the European Theater and the Battle of the Bulge. He worked as a design draftsman at General Electric for 40 years.

He and his wife spent winters in Ft. Myers, Fla. for the past 25 years. Ray was involved in scouting, was an avid fisherman and enjoyed fishing off his boat in Lake Erie. He was known as “QE”. Ray loved to hunt at his camp in Ludlow, Pa. and spent many years enjoying the outdoors. He enjoyed woodworking and made toys and a cradle for his grandchildren.

Ray enjoyed traveling around the country, Canada, and some countries in Europe. He belonged to the 8th Armored Association and attended many of their reunions over the years. He was a member of the Siebenburger, Moose, Elks and VFW. He was quite a photographer; taking pictures and then making his own prints for friends.

Ray is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 63 years, Rose Ann; one daughter, Karen of Wesleyville;one son, Ken and daughter-in-law, Tracy of St. Louis, Mo.; two brothers, Bernard and Norbert (Kate) all of Harborcreek; three grandchildren, Jennifer Hall, Ashley Petter and Lauren Pastewka; four great-grandchildren, Troy and Gabe Petter and Asher and Joseph Hall; cousins, nieces and nephews.

Robert W. Roache

Robert W. Roache, age 80, of North East, died on Wednesday August 15, 2012 at UPMC Hamot.

He was born on November 13, 1931 in North East to the late Paul W. and Mary Catherine Graham Roache.

In 1950 Robert graduated North East High School and was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the United States Navy.

He was formerly employed with the North East School District as a school bus driver for 25 years, retiring in 1993.  He also owned and operated Bob’s Appliance Store in North East, served as North East Cemetery maintenance supervisor, and St. Barnabas House facility engineer.

Robert was a member of St. Gregory Catholic Church, North East JC Club (past president), and enjoyed woodworking, landscaping, automotive mechanics, and home construction.

In addition to his parents, preceded in death are his sister Jean Butts and her husband Clifford and nephew Paul Butts.

Robert will be sadly missed by his wife of 56 years Anne Davis Roache whom he married July 21, 1956; children, Michael P. Roache of Rochester, N.Y., Robert M. Roache and wife Judy of North East, Susan A. Andrzejewski and husband Tony of North East, Kerry E. Dor and husband Lyonel of Saco, Maine, Thomas P. Roache of North East, James H. Roache and fiance Caroline Collins of Stow, MA; grandchildren, Matthew Johnson-Roache, Nicole Burrows, Patrick Roache, Julia Roache, Danielle Dor, Yusuf Dor, Amirah Dor; Sherrie Roache-Nowak, Lisa Craig, Tammy Wienhiemer, and Sam Chestnut; great-grandchildren, Autin Roache and Theodore Burrows; Nieces, Mary Abraham of Marion, OH, and Carol Baker of Lakeland, FL, a nephew George Mark Thomas and companion Ruth of Erie; and several cousins.

Eva Irene Learn

Eva Irene Learn, age 88, of Harborcreek, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2012 with her caring family by her side at the Walnut Creek Golden Living Center. She was born on December 1, 1923, daughter of the late James and Ethel Space of Reidsburg, Pa.

In 1945 Eva married her husband, Eugene Learn and moved to Erie to lovingly raise her family of four children. Eva loved spending time with her family, flower and vegetable gardening, traveling, cruising, camping, playing bingo and occasional trips to the local casinos.

Eva was a member of Wesleyville Carl Neff American Legion Post #571 Women’s Auxiliary and the East Erie Moose WOTM #155.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and James Space and two sisters, Edna Forringer and Elsie Wilson. Eva is survived by her husband of 67 years, Eugene Learn; six sisters, Sarah Ruffner of Rimersburg, Pa., Leona Survey and Geraldine Space of Reidsburg, Pa.; Mildred Byers and AldaWhitehill of Erie, and Florence Eberlin of Harborcreek; two sons, Leroy E. Learn Sr. (Margaret) of North East and David E. Learn Sr. (Eunice) of Harborcreek; two daughters, Helen M. Wood (Alan) of Millcreek and Patti L. Steele (Stephen) of Harborcreek; 14 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. Masters, Dr. Baig and the staff at Walnut Creek Golden Living Center nursing home for their excellent care of their beloved one. Eva will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
