This year’s Cherry Festival, the sole fundraiser for the North East Fire Department, will begin on July 10 and will conclude on July 14.
As part of the festival, the 67th Annual Cherry Festival Parade will begin at 4 p.m. sharp on July 14; rain or shine. It is not too early to start thinking about organizing a group of co-workers, friends, or relatives to celebrate the day by entering a float in the parade.
The theme for the 2012 parade is “North East Agriculture; What a Great Place to Pick” with $13,350 in cash prizes available with several categories.
Cash prizes are available for best high school band, best percussion line, best senior drum & bugle corp., best junior drum & bugle corp., best music, best military color guard, best competitive color guard, longest distance fire company, best baton corp-senior, best baton corp-junior, best dance team, best gymnastics group, best motorized unit, best float and best novelty unit.
“At this point we are pleased to announce that 12 bands have already pre-registered for the parade” stated Bryan Davis, Fuller Hose firefighter and Parade Co Chairman.
A slight change with this year’s parade is that instead of trophies, monetary awards (1st place will be $75.00 and 2nd place will be $50.00) will be offered in the following categories: best appearing fire engine, best appearing ladder truck, best appearing rescue truck, best appearing ambulance, best appearing water tender, best appearing antique vehicle and best appearing antique fire truck.
“The reason for the change is to provide a better incentive for fire departments to proudly display their apparatus in our parade and we hope the award will somewhat offset the travel cost,” said Davis.
Award announcements will be made at the Money Tent on the festival grounds at approximately 7 p.m.
