Robert Sprague Hitchcock, 94, of Erie, died Friday afternoon September 23, 2011 at St. Vincent Health Center following a brief illness. A resident of Erie most of his life he was born in Meadville, Pa. on May 28, 1917 a son of the late Chester L. and Edna Smith Hitchcock.

Robert served in the South Pacific with the United States Army during World War II. He went on to work for Marcy’s Garage and the G.E. before owning Hitchcock’s Garage for 20 years and retiring in 1979. He loved cars and his wood stove.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers, Harold, Charles, Earl, and Don Hitchcock; and three sisters, Helen Zirkle, Alice Amos, and Mildred.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Norma Lietzow Hitchcock; three sons, Walter Hitchcock and his wife Marsha of Richmond, Va., William Hitchcock and his wife Kimberly of Erie, and Peter Hitchcock and his wife Pam of Columbus, Ohio; three daughters, Leonie Degnan and her husband Alan of Girard, Betty Filly and her husband Kenneth of Erie, Jeannie Curtis and her husband Robert of Harborcreek; one sister, Dora Kahler of Statesville, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Services and burial will be private in Erie County Memorial Gardens. Funeral arrangements were made by the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Road, Erie, 16504.
