4 foreign exchange students return home after year abroad

Four North East families hosted foreign exchange students this school year. The students were, from left, Amelie Merkant, of Germany; Carmen Calzada Diez, of Spain; Emily DiModica, of Italy,; and Saara Sorsa, of Finland.

The local chapter of AFS has said goodbye to this year’s exchange students.

Four girls participated in the local chapter this year and went to school at North East High School.

The students arrived in early August and September and left on Monday, June 25. One student was a semester program student and the other three were full-year program students.

Amelie Merkant, from Germany, was hosted by the David Peck family. Merkant returned in January as she was only here for a semester. While here, she enjoyed being a part of the cross-country and basketball teams.

Carmen Calzada Diez, from Spain, was hosted by the Perry Busch family. She had been busy participating on the volleyball, basketball and track and field teams.

Saara Sorsa, from Finland, was hosted by the Don Mackellar family. Sorsa enjoyed meeting and making new friends with the students at NEHS as well as the other AFS students.

Emma DiModica, from Italy, was hosted by the Eric Olesen and Don Mackellar families. She said she was happy that the students at NEHS were so friendly and welcoming to her and the other AFS students.

The chapter is looking for new host families for the upcoming school year.

Anyone who would like to be a host family should visit www.afsusa.org/hostfamily to learn about the application process.

Applications must be completed by Wednesday, July 25, for the students to arrive in August.

The local chapter has been hosting students since 1959.
