On July 1, Pennsylvania State Police and Crescent Hose Co. were contacted regarding an unresponsive male in Lake Erie in North East Township.

Upon arrival, it was learned that William P. Alex, 62, of Erie, was deceased due to an apparent drowning.

Witnesses on the shoreline observed the victim floating and unresponsive in the water.

Through the course of the investigation, it was determined that Alex was attempting to swim to a large rock about 150 yards into the lake. While swimming, he began to struggle and was unable to make it to safety.

A witness recovered the victim from the water and first-responders attempted CPR. Attempts at reviving the victim were unsuccessful.

No foul play is suspected.
