UNION CITY — Norm Troyer was a fine enough running back for the Union City Bears to be named co-captain of the 1954 Erie Lions Club Save an Eye All-Star Team.

A 1954 graduate of Union City High School, Troyer went on to play football at Penn State — until he blew out a knee in 1957, that is. The injury ended his gridiron career.

He will be inducted as one of nine new members of the Union City School District’s Wall of Achievement Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the high school football field, just before the Bears battle the Cambridge Springs Blue Devils at 7 p.m.

But Troyer hasn’t been selected to the second class of nominees for his athletic prowess. Troyer was selected on the strength of his five decades of service to Union City as a teacher, volunteer and businessman.
