With a 4-4 vote on the table to approve Howard “Skip” Laird Wednesday afternoon as Corry’s head wrestling coach, all eyes were on Gene Stoddard.

Stoddard, president of the Corry Area School, hesitated. The decision whether to rehire Laird was on Stoddard’s shoulders during the roll call vote.

The more than 70 people in the room appeared to be holding their breath.

Then Stoddard spoke.

“Purely in the interest of the students — yes,” Stoddard said.

Members of the public, which mostly was composed of wrestlers and parents — broke into applause.

In addition to Stoddard, board members who voted to approve Laird as head wrestling coach were Robert Craker, Deborah Wood, Betty Lees and Chris Johnson.
