ERIE — The Erie Community Foundation on Monday announced a $1 million fund for the creation of a regional community college — the largest monetary commitment in the organization's history.

Foundation President Michael Batchelor said that without a community college, the educational attainment and income rates in the area will likely continue to fall below those in the state and the country, the Erie Times-News reported.

The Foundation also announced a newly created Coalition for Our Community College to help generate continued support for the effort. The announcement drew a near 60-person crowd, including business leaders, nonprofit representatives and Erie County Executive Barry Grossman, according to the Erie Times-News.

The fund is part of a recent swell of support for a local community college, including a legislative push by Sen. Jane Earll, of Fairview (R-49), that will set aside a share of table games revenue from Presque Isle Downs & Casino, worth $1.5 million to $2 million per year, for the effort.
