The Union City School Board discussed renovations to Union City Area Elementary School during the board’s Oct. 1 committee-of-the-whole meeting.
A week later, during the board’s regular meeting on Oct. 8, the board took initial steps toward the renovation process.
Under building and grounds, the board approved a motion to have John Stehli, certified technical roof consultant of Roof Consulting Services LLC, write specifications for the roof replacement for the elementary school. The cost to hire Stehli would be $11,400.
“The roof is starting to fail,” schools Superintendent Matthew Bennett said during the committee-of-the-whole meeting. “We’ll have John Stehli walk the roof and get specs.”
In another motion, the board approved seeking bids for the elementary school roof replacement.
Other problem areas Bennett pointed out are the plumbing, doors and windows. He said the kitchen needs updating and the ceiling tiles, gymnasium and wrestling room need renovated. He asked the board about paving the parking lot, if they want to heat the entrances and keep the canopies at the entrances.
Bennett said the district could have four to five companies tour the facility and the work could be done in phases. Bennett said he would like board approval to get information for the renovations.
Also pertaining to Union City Area Elementary School, the board approved a request for proposal for a guaranteed energy savings project at the elementary school building.
Approving the motions were board members George Trauner, Stephen Gilbert, Douglas Hopson, Lori Lewis, Dr. Barb Miller and Kimberle Thomas. Blain Blakeslee, Brian Gregor and David Robinson were absent from the meeting.
