The Corry Area School District board of directors is looking to fill a vacancy after one of its nine members resigned to take a job as the district's transportation coordinator.
During Monday night's meeting, board members accepted a letter of resignation from Mandi Johnson and further declared a vacant seat on the CASD board of directors. Johnson's resignation was effective Sept. 8.
Johnson resigned from the board because she has accepted a paid position with the school district, which means she can no longer hold that public office, according to CASD Superintendent Sheri Yetzer.
"She could not hold a public office and be a paid district employee," Yetzer said. "She is employed by the school district and when you're employed by the school district, you cannot be a board member."
Later on in Monday's meeting, the eight remaining school board members unanimously approved the appointment of Johnson as CASD's transportation coordinator, effective Sept. 15, at a prorated salary of $45,000.
Yetzer said Johnson was offered the job following a round of interviews of candidates interested in the transportation coordinator position.
"We followed the same procedure that we always do when there's an opening in the school district and that is advertisement, interview and then selection out of the pool of candidates," she said.
"We're very excited," Yetzer added when asked about Johnson joining the CASD team.
Corry's school board now has 30 days to fill the vacancy left by Johnson's departure.
"The board has chosen to put an ad in the paper and seek letters of interest from the community. They will review the letters and invite the candidates to the next board meeting," Yetzer said.
Anyone interested in applying for the school board open seat is asked to send a letter of interest and brief resume to Vicki Anderson at the Corry Area School District administration office at 540 E. Pleasant St., Corry, PA 16407.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, a resident of the Corry Area School District for at least one year and cannot currently hold a public office.
All letters of interest and resumes must be received by noon on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2020.
"The candidates that show interest in the position will be invited to the board meeting to be interviewed and then the board will make a selection based on that particular interview," Yetzer said.
The next school board meeting is on Monday, Sept. 28.
