A Back to School event on Sunday, coordinated by the Corry Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 264, was considered a success by Post Commander Julia Drinkall who said people started showing up two hours before the event. While giveaway totals have not been calculated yet, there were 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to give away. Any remaining bags will be donated to Corry-area schools, and Drinkall said inquiries for backpacks can be made to school guidance counselors. The VFW donated $9,000 to the event, with contributions by Corry Central Labor Club, Moose Lodge 98, Corry American Legion Post 365, Sons of the American Legion and CJE Bingo Supplies, bringing the event total donations to an estimated $13,000, Drinkall said. In addition to the free backpacks, there was face painting, a bounce house and inflatable slide, a dunking booth and rock climbing.
