Grant helps ready disaster team

If a major disaster should strike the local area, members of the American Red Cross Disaster Action Teams in Corry are now better equipped to respond to the situation.

A $1,880 grant from the Corry Community Foundation recently allowed the action teams to purchase much-needed items that are essential in an emergency situation — something the chapter house could not have done on its own.

“We didn’t have our own funding to purchase this equipment,” said Mary Rogers, American Red Cross Corry Chapter executive director. “So now we want to say thank you for helping us become better prepared for a disaster in the community.”

Members of the Disaster Action Teams invited Corry Community Foundation board of trustees member Mamie Smith to the chapter house Tuesday to get a first-hand look at the purchases.

The money was used to buy 30 cots, 30 blankets, 30 pillows and 30 reflective vests, which will be worn by volunteers at a disaster scene.
