Volunteer, retired teacher, looks to future

Journal photo by Stephen Sears Barbara French, a longtime third-grade teacher and mental-health advocate, will say goodbye to her Corry home on East South Street in August, when she moves to Gurnee, Ill., to live with one of her three daughters.

As an elementary teacher for 29 years, Barbara French learned her lessons well — from generations of third-graders.

“Life isn’t fair, but third-graders insist on fairness. They will tell you what’s fair,” said French, who spent all of her teaching years at the former Concord Elementary School in Corry. “I learned to be fair and treat people equally.”
