Amateur radio event

Amateur radio operator Steve Walter, 62, of Spartansburg — call sign WA3A — took part in a 2020 American Radio Relay League Field Day, which is designed to test emergency response skills. Operators are encouraged to make as many contacts as possible over a 24-hour period and at 22 hours in, Walter had made 1,252 contacts. He set up at a remote location hosted by the Union City Wireless Association at 18025 Buffalo Road. Walter has been using amateur radio since he was 15, when all contacts were recorded with paper and pen instead of the computer he uses currently.
