The Corry Area School District has a revised policy in place concerning volunteer coaches and volunteer assistant coaches that says volunteer coaches must be board-approved.

The Corry Area School Board this week approved the document, Policy 916, with several changes.

District Superintendent Brian Dougherty said the policy now gives the board the authority to approve volunteer coaches and other volunteer assistants.

“The board wanted to tighten up the control over volunteer coaches,” Dougherty said. “In the past, if an individual volunteered, they could volunteer through the coaches.”

The policy went into effect after it was approved by the board this week.

The policy states that “all volunteer coaches, prior to their assumption of duties as a volunteer coach, must be approved by the board.”

According to the policy, a volunteer is “one who voluntarily offers and provides a service to the school district without receiving compensation.”
