Mercyhurst cadet ranks at top of ROTC merit list
Katherine Porter

Mercyhurst College senior and Corry resident Katherine Porter, a cadet in the U.S. Army ROTC, has placed in the top 5 percent of 4,700 cadets in the nation on the ROTC’s 2010 National Order of Merit List.

Porter is an intelligence studies major slated to graduate from Mercyhurst in May.

The OML represents the cumulative performance of cadets spanning their freshman, sophomore and juniors years in college, with a grade point average accounting for 40 percent, leadership counting for 45 percent and physical fitness 15 percent.

The ranking also includes successful completion of a capstone event, “Leadership Development and Assessment Course,” which is designed to train cadets to Army standards and to develop leadership and evaluate officer potential.

As a result of Porter’s performance, she has placed in the top 5 percent and has earned first choice of branch, electing to begin her career as an active duty officer in the Army’s Military Intelligence Corps, said Lt. Col. David P. Goodman of the “Pride of PA” Army ROTC Battalion, which includes Mercyhurst, Gannon and Penn State Behrend.
