It’s time to become a princess, Batman, a little angel, or, perhaps a popular pumpkin.

Children ages newborn to 12 years will don their Halloween costumes to participate in Union City’s annual Halloween parade and costume contest.

The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 31, and begins with the parade at 5:30 p.m.

The parade for children in costumes starts in the municipal parking lot behind the Salvation Army store on West High Street. Children will walk south on Main Street to the Union City Volunteer Fire Department Social Hall, 50 Second Ave.

Judging of costumes will then be held in the following age groups: 0 to 3 years old, 4 to 6 years old, 7 to 9 years old and 10 to 12 years old.

Judging will be held in the following categories:

• creepiest

• funniest

• best homemade

• cutest

Cash prizes will be awarded to first- and second-place winners.

The parade and costume contest are open to the public for free.

The events are being sponsored by Union City Borough’s Parks and Recreation Commission.

All children will receive a reflective trick-or-treat-bag, courtesy of the Parks and Recreation Commission.

Trick-or-treat follows the costume contest from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The parade and costume contest are separate from Halloween events the fire department is hosting earlier in the day and later that evening.
