First- through third-grade Conelway Elementary Students who received local writing contest honors in December have now placed at the regional level.

The contest — which was sponsored by Northwest Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English and Language Arts, an affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of English, and the PennLake National Writing Project — challenged students to submit a piece of writing based on a given set of prompts.

All entries were scored using the Pennsylvania Writing Domain Scoring Guideline, the same measure used to score Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) tests.

Conelway students who placed were:

• Courtney McGuire, second grade, who received first place and a $25 book gift certificate for her piece “My Nice Teacher.”

• Megan Dennis, third grade, who received first place and a $25 book gift certificate for her piece “A Family Christmas Eve.”
