A fundraiser that was recently held to assist two Panama, N.Y., firefighters who were injured while responding to a call has raised more than $20,000.

David Dole and Adam Kester were injured on Nov. 10 near Blockville while fighting a fire.

The accident occurred when a well casing — 14 inches in diameter and 31 inches long — that was used as a chimney, became dislodged from the structure and struck the two men who both suffered severe injuries.

Following the accident, Dole and Kester were taken to UPMC Hamot hospital in Erie. They spent two months being treated and are now rehabilitating from their injuries.

Kester suffered two crushed vertebrae and other broken vertebrae.

Dole suffered multiple fractures, including a compression fracture of vertebrae.

Although Panama Fire Department has workers’ compensation to cover medical expenses, the two firefighters and their families are incurring expenses on their road to recovery.

The recent fundraiser was held at the Lakewood (N.Y.) American Legion Memorial Post 1286 , and featured live music and a Chinese auction.
