Dr. Richard Vanderweele was recently promoted

Dr. Richard Vanderweele was recently promoted to the rank of colonel in the U.S. Air Force.

Vanderweele is the director of endodontics — AEGD-2, 59 dental training squadron (AETC), Joint Base San Antonio, Lackland Air Force Base in Texas.

In this position, he oversees the entire didactic and clinical endodontic curriculum for 17 AEGD-2 residents in the Air Force’s largest dental residency.

He provides specialty-level comprehensive endodontic diagnosis, emergency care and nonsurgical/surgical treatment for more than 227,000 beneficiaries.

He is a 1996 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. VanderWeele entered into the USAF Dental Corps in 1996. In 1997, he completed his advanced education in General Dentistry-1, training at the David Grant Medical Center, Travis Air Force Base in California.

VanderWeele completed his specialty training in endodontics at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base in 2005.

He earned his board certification in 2012 and is a diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics.

VanderWeele is a selected member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society.

His previous assignments and duties include advanced education in general dentistry resident at Travis Air Force Base; general dental officer at Lajes Air Base in Azores, Portugal; general dental officer at Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany, general dental officer at Randolph Air Force Base in Texas; endodontic resident at Lackland Air Force Base; chief of endodontics at Lakenheath RAF in England; chief of endodontics, dental support flight commander, clinical flight commander at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska; director, professional services, dental evaluation and consultation services, Joint Base, San Antonio, Texas, and Ft. Sam in Houston, Texas; and most recently, director of endodontics AEGD-2 Flight in Lackland.

VanderWeele is married to Kelly (Mitchell) VanderWeele. They have four children, Emily, 14, Elizabeth, 13, Natalie, 9, and Holly, 7.

He is the son of Dr. Alan VanderWeele, formerly of Corry, and son-in-law of Nancy and David Mitchell of Corry.
