Boy Scout Troop 343 of Centerville recently held a banquet to celebrate the accomplishments the members achieved over the past year.

In addition to the awards, the troop celebrated its one-year anniversary. With cooperation from a group of parents and the Centerville Volunteer Fire Department, the troop began in January 2011.

The troop number of 343 was chosen to give tribute to the 343 firefighters who were lost during the 9/11 tragedy in New York City. One of the future goals the scouts picked is to visit the 9/11 memorial and fire stations in New York.

"We know it will take a lot of hard work and fundraising, but it will be worth it," said Logan Chaffin, troop senior patrol leader.

The scouts have been busy during their first year. In addition to camping, they have been working on various service projects including keeping the roadsides litter-free to visiting the veterans at the VA hospital.

The boys also had a chance to participate in fun events. Most recently they attended an Erie Bayhawks basketball game. Other fun activities have included bowling and a monster truck show.

"It was a busy year. And this coming year will probably be just as busy, if not more," said Pete Hackett, troop committee chairman.

During the banquet, the scouts were recognized for their accomplishments and hard work. In appreciation of their hard work and service, each of the boys were presented with a special engraved pocket knife from the fire department to commemorate the one-year anniversary.
