R.L. McCray was born and raised in Corry, graduating from Corry High School in 1969.
He graduated Cum Laude with a mass communications degree from Point Park University in 1973.
He began working at the Corry Evening Journal in May of 1973. He was a sports writer and columnist for the Erie Times-News and Warren Times Observer from 1988-2004 when he returned to The Corry Journal.
McCray was named the Pennsylvania Swimming Coaches Association “journalist of the year” in 2006 and was the Pennsylvania Wrestling Round-up’s “media person of the year” in 2010.
He was a starter on the Point Park soccer team for three years. He played for the Corry dogs indoor and outdoor soccer teams, plus the ISA championship team from Titusville.
McCray played in the South Erie County Softball League for over 20 seasons and over 1,000 games. He also played three years with Clymer-Jamestown softball teams before playing in the Corry co-ed softball league. He bowled for many years and played in local golf leagues.
McCray lists his top one-on-one interviewees as Satchel Paige, Tommy John, Phil Niekro, Frank Robinson and Randy Johnson.
R.L. and his wife, Barb, a former sports editor for The Corry Journal, have been married for 22 years.
