Harriet McLean Smith turned 100 years young last week and has quite a story. She graduated from Corry High School in 1937. She was the daughter of Charles (Danner) and Gertrude Alice McLean. Harriett is the sister of Mary Alice Hammond, Hodie McLean and Joan Beardsley TenHagen. She owned and flew her own airplane, which she did at the age of 50. The Union-Sun & Journal newspaper did a feature article on her love affair with the Buffalo Bills. She played baseball, softball and basketball and also found time to raise seven children. Today she has 17 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great- great-grandchild. She now lives in Lockport, N.Y., and admits to loving every bit of life.
This Sunday, Alexander’s Restaurant in Findley Lake is again the site for the “Short Walk” fundraiser with donations going to Little People of America (LPA). Corry’s Katie Roche (a second grade teacher and LPA member) is co-chairing the event.
This Friday at Mead Park is the Slow Roll: Bike, Run, Walk. It starts at 5:30 p.m.
Slim and Red will appear at North Hills Golf Course on Thursday at 7 p.m.
The Corry cross country teams are hosting their annual soup and salad fundraiser in the high school cafeteria before Friday’s football game. There will be around 35 homemade soups, salad and lots of dessert.
Sympathy to the family and friends of Jay Jackson and Ken Smith.
Norm Upperman's surprise 80th birthday party went well with part of his family from Ohio on hand.
Belated birthday wishes to Scott Brady, Brady Deuink, Mike Calderone and Joe Marrs.
Celebrating today are Dale Henderson and Danielle Marie Hartman and tomorrow Cheryl Holton Utegg.
Hard to believe that Bernie Ross turned 96 years young yesterday (kudos Barb Volk for making the food) and Roger Grape will be 89 tomorrow. That’s also Pete “the old antique dealer” Jaquith’s special day.
Celebrating Friday are Lisa Cox and Lynn Webster Piccirillo.
Thanks to Mike Woods and Kelly Cragg for coming up with a North East football roster for me at halftime of Friday's game. Mike was joined by his mom and dad at Tuesday’s cross country meet.
Happy anniversary to Laurie and Dan Gates. They sure dress up well for weddings.
If I heard it correctly, Jean Bailey (class of 1948) was the oldest Corry grad at homecoming on Friday night.
